International Schools are not only creating a buzz in Gurgaon, but also the whole of India. So what are international schools all about? Once you go through the websites of these international schools you will realize that such schools are all about atmosphere and environment, which is different from those of the other schools. The syllabus of such schools reflects a global perspective and the staff of the school is a sublime mix of different cultures.

Misconception about International Schools

Many people have a major misconception about international schools. This misconception revolves around the curriculum. The point being that if a school offers a combination of international curriculums like IB (International Baccalaureate) The GCSE (British Board), American, Canadian, or the IGCSE (international version of the GCSE); it does become an international school as many people believe it to be so. The very word 'international' should help you understand the concept behind international schools. It's not only about the curriculum but more about the cross-cultural contact and the practice of the pedagogic method.

The only two systems of education that can truly be called international are the IB and the IGCSE (International General Certification of Secondary Education).

Why Choose International Schools?

International schools, through the course of their teaching system encourage intrinsic qualities in the students which include activism, compassion, and leadership, and, multi-cultural acceptance. If we consider the IB program, it has three stages. The First stage is known as the Primary Year Program, the Second Stage is called the Middle Year Program, and the Final Stage is called a Diploma Program. The division is similar to that of Indian programs which are usually the, Primary, Secondary, and Higher Secondary stages.

Through the course of the IB program an intercultural awareness is bred into the student's right from the Primary Year Program. Moreover, the curriculum also allows students to connect across the various disciplines taught to them. This means there is a process of knowledge integration and all disciplines at various points of time intersect with each other. This feature is not to be found in the national curriculum. For e.g. children learn how the various calculations and formulae they have learnt Math can be applied to another subject, say Geography.

Learning is no longer a process of just listening and memorizing. It is more about using the learning for its application in various contexts. Retention and regurgitation, as is the focus in the Indian system are abhorred in the international system. In international schools students are taught beyond the content and the school encourages students to solve problems, investigate facts, conduct experiments, analyze, and also reflect.
